Charities Call on Tory Minister to Halt Universal Credit

Commenting on the news several charities have written to Iain Duncan Smith, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, to call for a halt to Universal Credit, SNP Work and Pensions spokesperson Dr Eilidh Whiteford said:

“Several charities have united to call on the UK government to immediately suspend the further implementation of Universal Credit in Scotland until the process of legislating new powers for the Scottish Parliament is complete.

“The implementation of Universal Credit has been a fiasco from the start with officials being unable to explain the reasoning behind their timescales or their feasibility, inept computer systems, and no real management. There is real concern that driving through Universal Credit at this stage will cause additional, unnecessary administrative complication.

“Iain Duncan Smith should recognise this call from across civic Scotland, to ensure our most vulnerable people do not suffer.”
